A downloadable game for Windows and Linux

An arcade racer in the spirit of the great 90s road racers, round the whole world: a low camera, a road that bends, climbs and throws you over crests, traffic to slice through and a clock that only checkpoints refill. The road is generated as you drive, five metres at a time, and it carries you through 781 places in all 202 countries and territories, the big countries state by state and province by province, through the seasons and their festivals. At the borders the road forks and you choose where to go next; between continents and to the islands you drive along the sea floor in a glass tunnel, or onto a ferry or the car train under the Channel.

Everything you see and hear is made by the program itself: the low-poly world, the sky, the stroke font, the engines and thirty-one radio stations that compose their music as you listen. No textures, no samples, no recordings.

Highlights

  • The whole world. 781 places, from the white cliffs of Dover to the moai, each with its own landscape, landmarks, houses, roadside stands and wildlife, its weather from thirty years of real climate data, its sun where it really stands.
  • Every country drives its own way: the side of the road, the markings, the signs (place names in their own scripts too), the number plates, speed cameras and tolls, the police in its livery, the traffic and the road quality.
  • Real heights. The road climbs and falls to how high the places really lie, from the Dead Sea to the Himalaya. Twenty-eight legendary roads, from the Stelvio to the Road of Bones; the passes climb in numbered hairpins to the height on their sign.
  • Two ways round the world. The world tour follows the map from neighbour to neighbour; the random tour leaps to another part of the world after every stage, each country once a round.
  • Life on the road. Hitchhikers and courier jobs, local heroes who challenge you in their own language, patrol cars that give chase, fast trains, airliners landing across the road, festivals, monsoon floods and snow walls.
  • Thirty-one radio stations, every track composed from its own seed; engines of four, eight and twelve cylinders; your own music as the station MY MUSIC.
  • More modes: the endless run against the clock, travel without a clock, a daily challenge, rallies and journeys, a championship against eleven rivals, a Track Lab whose codes friends can share, ghosts of your best drives, 69 awards and a passport with stamps and postcards.
  • Steam Deck ready: gamepad glyphs and rumble, performance profiles.

Install instructions

Windows 10 and 11: unpack the zip anywhere and start Sunstreak.exe, nothing to install. The program is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen may warn once: "More info", then "Run anyway".

Linux and the Steam Deck: unpack the tar.gz and start ./Sunstreak (any x86-64 distribution with glibc 2.35 or newer, SteamOS included). On the Steam Deck add it to Steam as a non-Steam game in desktop mode, then play it in game mode.

Put your own music (.ogg, .mp3, .flac, .wav, .xm, .mod) into the music folder beside the game and it plays as the station MY MUSIC. The itch app installs and updates the game for you as well.
